Abstract
This project investigates the recovery kinetics of cold-rolled AISI 420 stainless steel to support controlled annealing in multi-step forming processes. During cold rolling and forming, the material undergoes severe plastic deformation, increasing dislocation density, hardness, and yield stress while reducing ductility. To restore formability between processing steps, intermediate annealing is required, making accurate prediction of recovery behaviour essential. Annealing experiments were conducted at 500 °C on sheets of different thicknesses. The 100 µm sheet, which exhibited the highest initial hardness and strongest softening response, was selected for detailed modelling. Vickers hardness testing was used as the primary measurement method because it is non-destructive and allows repeated testing on the same sample. Hardness values were converted to yield stress using an empirically fitted logarithmic relationship.
