Abstract
Real time route guidance systems strongly influence route choice and therefore the distribution of traffic across a network. Although accurate travel time information can improve individual routing decisions, it can also amplify congestion and trigger oscillatory switching when many users respond to the same guidance simultaneously. This work investigates how information provided to drivers can be systematically designed and used as a stabilizing feedback signal. A dynamic model is adopted in which link densities evolve according to a macroscopic conservation law and drivers route preferences evolve through a logit based adaptation process driven by a communicated information signal. Operations in the free flow regime are considered. Sufficient conditions are derived for the existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic stability of an equilibrium. A key requirement is an explicit bound on the sensitivity of the information signal to current traffic density, which effectively limits the feedback gain of the coupled system. Using these theoretical results, an optimization framework is formulated to design an affine information signal that balances efficiency and credibility. The design problem enforces equilibrium consistency, respects link capacity constraints, and imposes stability bounds while minimizing total travel time.
