Abstract

This paper presents Model Predictive Control (MPC) for Point Absorber Wave Energy Converters (PAWECs), using short-term wave forecasting to predict incoming waves and compute excitation forces as system inputs. An observer corrects displacement, velocity, and force estimates to enhance control robustness under uncer- tainty. The study covers: the motivation and global potential of wave energy; mathematical PAWEC model- ing with state-space dynamics and all acting forces; short-term autoregressive wave forecasting; system overview and Simulink implementation; MPC pseudocode; and numerical results comparing four variants using MATLAB-based simulations, followed by three practical implementations within the WEC-Sim frame- work.: approximated excitation force (MPC Fa), full a priori knowledge (MPC Fe), and observer-enhanced control (MPCobs Fa) across noise-free and noisy conditions.
