Abstract

This thesis considers the k–ε turbulence model in the context of atmospheric modeling in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). First, the theoretical compatibility of k – ε with ASL modeling is considered, with specific reference to the Monin-Obukhov Similarity Theory (MOST) and work done by Van der Laan et al. (2017). Then, four variations of the k – ε turbulence model are implemented into an existing program (Luppes (1993)) that models atmospheric flow over a heterogeneous terrain. The data generated is compared against a previously verified mixing length turbulence model, and conclusions are made about the practical compatibility of the k – ε model with ASL modeling. It is determined that the MOST-adjusted k – ε turbulence model produces better results than the mixing length model. Unfortunately, the (theoretically more advanced) Van der Laan et al. model does not produce viable results.
