Abstract
Control systems are becoming increasingly complex due to their growing scale and heterogeneity. To manage this complexity, modular design has become a widely-adopted approach for the analysis and design of large-scale systems. Modularity enables the decomposition of complex systems into smaller subsystems that can be designed independently. However, subsystem design often relies on assumptions about their operating environment, which may be violated upon interconnection. This can result in overly conservative subsystem designs or undesirable behavior of the interconnected system. To tackle this problem, this thesis takes the first steps in developing a compositional framework based on integral quadratic constraints (IQCs) that explicitly accounts for the environment in which a system operates. We first establish the IQC framework in the absence of environmental assumptions. Building on this foundation, we introduce a richer notion of specifications in the form of assume-guarantee contracts that capture environmental assumptions. The resulting framework provides a systematic tool for the analysis of interconnected systems.
