Abstract

This thesis develops a physics-based MATLAB/Simscape model of a brine-based Temperature Control Unit (TCU) and evaluates its usefulness as a virtual test bench for engineering analysis. The considered system consists of a vapour-compression refrigeration loop coupled to a secondary coolant loop and includes relevant control-oriented components such as a thermostatic expansion valve, receiver, solenoid-controlled cooling branch, and hot-gas-bypass arrangement. The main objective is to study to what extent such a model, parameterised within plausible ranges and developed with limited validation data, can provide credible insights into system behaviour, operating limitations, component sizing, and control-oriented decision-making. Overall, the results show that the developed model is sufficiently credible for qualitative and exploratory use in relation to the real system, including operating envelope investigation, bottleneck identification, and preliminary component sizing support. At the same time, the model should presently be interpreted as a fit-for-purpose engineering model rather than a fully predictive digital twin, and further experimental validation is required before it can be used for high-confidence quantitative design decisions.
