Abstract

Superstring theory is the most promising theory aiming to unify the Standard Model and General Relativity. Superstring theory defines a 10 dimensional universe, which in order to be viewed through our 4 dimensional lenses, needs to undergo compactification processes. Compactifications are mostly produced in Calabi-Yau manifolds, since they give the most plausible low energy particle physics theories. More precisely, K3 surfaces are of great appeal since, without being trivial, they present the simplest characteristics of all Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this thesis, we give a basic introduction to string theory, covering string mass spectra and compactifications in Calabi-Yau manifolds, with a precise example of these compactifications on K3 surfaces. Moreover, a mathematical insight on how different string theories are related via mirror symmetry is given, with worked out examples of two different mirror K3 surfaces.
