Abstract

Self-healing polymers based on thermo-reversible Diels-Alder offer a promising solution in extending polymer lifespans and reducing plastic waste. This study investigates the kinetics, rheology, thermodynamics, and scale-up for the production of F3, a furan functionalized monomer synthesized by an epoxy-amine click reaction between Furfuryl Amine (FA) and Furfuryl Glycidyl Ether (FGE). By using 1H-NMR, it was determined that the reaction is autocatalyzed by the formed hydroxyl groups, with an activation energy of 65 kJ/mol. Diffusion limitations in this mono-functional system arose at high conversions above 85%, which were also linked to a sharp increase in viscosity. Rheology confirmed that F3 exhibits shear-thinning properties and follows the Arrhenius temperature dependence with a viscosity of 0.035 Pa · s at 70 °C under high shear. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) showed a highly exothermic initial reaction due to the release of epoxide ring strain, showing that managing heat release in upscaling is essential. Reactor designs for a production of 1000 kg/day were evaluated in a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR), a CSTR, and a Batch reactor. The batch reactor is the recommended direction for upscaling because the sizes of the PFR and CSTR are impractical.
