Abstract
AISI 420 stainless steel is used in blade-related applications where hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional stability are important. Local deformation can affect small functional geometries even when the overall response appears acceptable. This thesis investigates microscale deformation in AISI 420 steel under tensile loading using SEM-based digital image correlation. A SEM-DIC workflow was applied to one reference image and four deformed SEM images. The main strain component was Exx, corresponding to the tensile direction. The image series was processed using Ncorr, with 5th-95th percentile filtering before statistical evaluation. Macroscale strain was estimated from ImageJ line measurements and compared with the microscale DIC strain. The median Exx strain increased from 0.024 to 0.076, while macroscale strain increased from 0.031 to 0.088. Typical microscale strain stayed below macroscale strain, with median/macro ratios of 0.788-0.892. However, high-strain regions exceeded the macroscale strain at every step, with P95/macro ratios ranging from 1.348 to 1.684. The P95/median localization index increased from 1.712 to 1.921, showing progressive localization. The results show that SEM-DIC gives information not available from macroscale strain measurement alone. Although the exact microstructural origin could not be determined due to unavailable grain-orientation data, the workflow quantified heterogeneous microscale deformation in AISI 420 steel.
