Abstract

This report presents the development of a zero-dimensional transient heat-transfer model for an industrial furnace, implemented in Excel with supporting VBA functions. The motivation for the model is to create a first-principles basis for assessing the future use of green hydrogen and natural gas-hydrogen blends in industrial direct heating applications. The model uses an overall energy balance including combustion heat input, flue gas heat loss, wall conduction, internal forced convection, and outside natural convection. Temperature-dependent gas properties and fuel-composition effects are included to compare different input powers and hydrogen fractions. The model predicts physically consistent trends: higher input power and higher hydrogen content increase the furnace temperature. For the 54 kW natural gas case, the predicted oven temperature was close to the measured outlet temperature, although the outer wall temperature was overpredicted. The model therefore provides a useful first estimate, while further improvements should focus on wall heat loss, radiation, and spatial temperature gradients.
