Abstract

The main focus of the research in this thesis was on the catalyst and condition screening for a reaction between epichlorohydrin and an aqeous solution of potassium cyanate with the goal of obtaining 5-chloromethyl-2-oxazolidinone as the main product. Some experiments with glycidol as the starting material were done, but not investigated further after being deemed not usable. The results obtained from these experiments were found to be influenced by the age of the used potassium cyanate solution to a significant degree, due to the cyanate anion undergoing hydrolysis. Because of this, no definitive conclusions about the optimal reaction conditions and catalyst usage can be drawn.
