Abstract
In this thesis we set up framework for defining and calculating the Reidemeister torsion of tangles. We define a small set of elementary tangles and operations and prove that any knot can be built using them. This construction method is extended to the complement of a tangle. Furthermore, we consider how the fundamental group of a tangle changes under the operations by means of an example. The same is done for the torsion of a tangle.
