Abstract
Some patients with severe COPD develop chronic hypercapnia, which is the retention of CO2 due to poor ventilation in the lungs. This disease state is associated with neuroinflammation, a disrupted blood-brain barrier and cognitive impairment. This colloquium investigates cognitive decline in hypercapnic COPD patients, the molecular pathways linking hypercapnia to brain dysfunction and what possible treatments for these patients could be.
