Abstract
The topic of the master thesis that will be presented in this colloquium is focused on strategic decisions for investments in raw material bulk storage. The assignment is conducted for DSM Resins, a synthetic resin producer for applications in both the coating and composite industry. The research is originated by the need to increase production capacity, optimize the process and meet new quality consistency demands as a result of an increasing demand for resins of DSM worldwide. The focus lies on the role of raw material bulk storage in relation to the development process of new products and capacity expansion projects. The raw materials in question are conditioned and non-conditioned liquid chemicals with specific properties like low flashpoint and toxic appearance. The research provides a systematic and generally applicable method to determine whether and when investment in bulk storage and handling of a particular raw material can be justified. A following method determines after the justification or in case of capacity expansion the required optimal storage capacity by taking account for all aspects of tank sizing. A business case of an actual expansion project at the DSM Resins facility in Schoonebeek and a site development project in Ellesmere Port are added to implement and validate the methods.
