Abstract
Koopmans Meel B.V. is a flour producing company in Leeuwarden. They produce, besides bulk products, 118 different products. These products have to be bagged and, currently, stored in end storage. Due to the need to use the warehouse - where the end storage is placed - for other purposes, the management team at Koopmans thought that maybe it would be possible to produce on an Make-To-Order (MTO) basis instead of an Make-To-Stock (MTS) basis. This research focuses on the prerequisites and consequences of both MTO and MTS. First a theoretic exploration of the two methods of control is conducted after which a model is designed to advise Koopmans in their choice between MTO and MTS. The advice stemming from this model is somewhat surprising; results show that with minimal effort (no large investments are needed) the packaging at Koopmans can be improved. The insights from this research prove to be valuable for Koopmans.
