Abstract
Abstract: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a life threatening disease and is one of the most common lung disorders in the United States. Smoking is the leading cause of this disease but until now the specific pathogenesis of COPD remains unknown. Nowadays, researchers speculate that COPD is related to an autoimmune process. The aim of this thesis is to investigate if COPD can be seen as a genuine autoimmune disease. In conclusion, some studies have shown that COPD is related to a disorder in the immune system. However, the effect of smoking should not be underestimated.
