Abstract
For the past decades computers have become faster and smaller very rapidly. And whilst there is still enough room for improvement, scientist have already started research on an entire new generation of computers, the quantum computer. A quantum computer improves on the traditional computer using the principles of quantum mechanics. Instead of bits they use quantum bits. And my research focuses on trapped atomic ions as promising candidates to serve as quantum bits for building a quantum computer. The United States, National Institute of Standards and Technology, has demonstrated that a trapped Beryllium-9-ion can serve as fundamental building block for such a quantum computer. The goal of my project is theoretically asses the prospects of using a trapped Barium-138-ion instead of the Beryllium-9-ion.
