Abstract

During the Epoch of Reionisation, the neutral Intergalactic Medium of the Early Universe was transformed into the ionised plasma observed today. The initial stage of this process was characterised by the formation and expansion of individual bubbles of ionised material surrounding the first galaxies. In this work, we investigate the topology of this expanding bubble network using tools from computational and algebraic topology. We use a geometric construction called alpha-shapes to model expanding bubble networks and we analyse their topology in terms of persistent Betti numbers. Betti numbers count different types of topological features (such as components, tunnels, and voids) and persistence is a measure of their lifetime. We identify different stages of topological development common to all bubble networks and investigate the influence of clustering, varying birth times, and the power spectrum of primordial density fluctuations. Our findings suggest that this could be a useful approach for studying the topology of more realistic models of reionisation.
