Abstract
The AGOR cyclotron at UMCG-PARTREC is able to accelerate all stable ions over a wide energy range. After the extraction from the cyclotron the ions need to be transported to the rooms in which the experiments take place. For optimal beam quality the magnets used in this transport must be set correctly. In this project an algorithm was developed to automatically align the beam centroid with the reference trajectory. The algorithm is based on a first order description of the ion optics and uses a discrete state-space representation of the system. Simulations based on first order optics show excellent stability and convergence rate properties. The effect of positional misalignments of the different magnet elements on the algorithm were also investigated and were shown to result in a steady state error in the algorithm. Novel methods for measuring these misalignments using the beam are developed and a criterion for optimum beam transport in a system containing misalignments is introduced.
