Abstract
In this bachelor thesis, the acceptability of Dutch sentences containing an ‘er’ that functions as two prepositional phrases with differing roles is examined. The word ‘er’ can hold multiple different functions at once, whether it can hold the same function twice was uncertain. This paper looks into whether the prepositional ‘er’ can perform as an prepositional phrase that functions as an argument and adjunct. To test this, an acceptability judgement task was conducted. This task consisted of a questionnaire in which 27 Dutch participants gave their opinion on the acceptability of sentences using a Likert-scale. The results showed that most Dutch speakers do not regard a sentence in which a prepositional ‘er’ functions as two prepositional phrases acceptable. Furthermore, looking at the role of the prepositional ‘er’, it became clear that using the prepositional ‘er’ to replace an adjunct had a bigger effect on the acceptability of sentences. The explicitness of the argument, on the other hand, had little effect. This could be explained by people not liking excess information loss in sentences or long-distance dependencies being resolved incorrectly.
