Abstract

In an era marked by escalating climate change impacts, this study addresses and evaluates a novel tool designed to estimate and forecast the carbon emissions of server-based computational tasks. By leveraging real-time and historical data on Carbon Intensity (CI), and integrating it with Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and server hardware configurations, the tool provides a platform to assess and manage the environmental impact of data center operations. The system utilizes regional energy mix data across several countries to render detailed insights into the temporal and spatial variability of emissions. Our results demonstrate the significant role of regional energy sourcing and CI in shaping the carbon footprint of computational tasks. This study underscores the potential of targeted, data-driven strategies to reduce the carbon emissions of the ICT sector and highlights the importance of temporal and geographic factors in environmental impact mitigation.
