Abstract
Is the statement ‘It will rain tomorrow’ already true or false today? We do not know if it is true or false yet, since we feel both are genuine possibilities. However, if it is already true today that it will rain tomorrow, does this not mean that it will necessary rain tomorrow? This is known as the problem of future contingents. If statements about contingent events in the future already have truth-values, this means the future is fixed. Since we do not believe the future to be fixed, we seek a logic in which statement about future contingent events are neither true nor false. Possible candidates to deal with the problem of future contingents are three-valued modal logics. We will discuss three different logics and whether or not they satisfactory solve the problem of future contingents.
