Abstract
At the container terminal of Tanjung Priok port, Jakarta, an average growth of 17% in number of containers processed was measure over the last 4 years. Originally, the port was designed to handle 5 million TEU or twenty foot containers per year this number, however, is already being exceeded and the new port expansion is still under construction. In order to optimize the port operations we looked into the berthing process and the assignment of quay cranes. In this thesis a mathematical model which represents the allocation of ships to docks and the assignment of quay cranes is made. Using this model different planning and allocation methods are compared. As a benchmark, the current situation is used consisting of a first in first out (FIFO) planning algorithm. This benchmark is compared to a heuristic based model in the form of a genetic algorithm (GA) and a model based optimization using the model predictive control (MPC) optimization. We found that the GA and MPC both performed better than the current FIFO algorithm. However, there were big differences between the two used methods. Where GA could generate an optimal solution for smaller data sets, MPC showed great potential when used to plan more ships over a longer period of time. This shows that MPC can be a useful method to be used in allocation problems.
