Abstract

The tundish skull is the residual steel and impurities that remains in a tundish after casting operations. Currently, this tundish skull removal is done using a hydraulic excavator machine and hereafter the skull is cut with an oxygen lance so it can be removed in smaller pieces. The tundish skull removal process at the Direct Sheet Plant (DSP) at Tata Steel Ijmuiden however causes harm to the production environment. This research strives to make a redesign of this process such that the harm to the production environment, consisting of smoke and dust pollution, is mitigated. Based on the existing literature, brainstorm sessions and multiple interviews, ten redesigns are considered of which two are analyzed more thorough. Based on a financial and strategic analysis of these redesigns, it is found that cutting of tundish skulls can be omitted 85% of the time at the berenkiephal by transporting whole tundish skulls to the recycling section. This redesign is a first step in the complete elimination of dust and smoke pollution. For the long-term, it is advised to install tundish skull pushers. Using tundish skull pushers, a hydraulic excavator is not needed anymore and when this is combined with big volume transport of the tundish skull, the cutting of tundish skulls can be fully omitted at the berenkiephal of the DSP.
