Abstract

Most of the transportation of goods that need to be transported around the world is done with the use of container ships. In 2012, 601.8 million twenty foot equivalent units were transported all over the world, and that number increased with an average of 17% over the last 4 years. Many seaports, including the seaports of Indonesia, feel this enormous increase in cargo they have to process. A previous research conducted on the optimization of port operations, and in particular the berth and quay crane allocation, shows that when the Indonesian seaport Tanjung Priok changes its planning methods, the total costs drop significantly. These new planning methods also increase throughput, which enables Tanjung Priok to cope with the increase in containers they have to process. This thesis takes the information and results from this previous research and expands the scope of the system. Instead of investigating the influence of new planning methods on one seaport, this report shows the influence that changing the planning methods has on an other seaport as well. The berth and quay crane allocation of container ships that sail between Tanjung Priok and Tanjung Perak is done with two different methods to show what effect it has on the total costs. The use of the current planning method First-Come First-Serve (FCFS) is compared with the new method Model Predictive Control (MPC). The previous research shows that when one seaport uses the MPC method on a data set of 29 ships, the total costs drop with 10,56%. Because of this it is expected that when both Tanjung Priok and Tanjung Perak use the MPC method it will decrease the combined total costs as well. The total costs of the current situation, where both seaports use the FCFS method, are €6.755.600,00. When the planning method are changed to MPC, the combined total costs of the same data set of ships becomes €6.222.905,00. This is a decrease in total costs of 7,89%. This report shows that the MPC method has a high potential on decreasing the total costs and with that increase profit for the Indonesian seaports Tajung Priok and Tanjung Perak.
