Abstract
Economic valuation of ecosystem services (ESS) has been suggested as a solution to the problem of under representation of ecosystem values in policy decisions worldwide. The production functioning, household production function, stated preference and replacement cost/cost of treatment methods (all operating from an anthropocentric approach) may translate ESS values into economic values. The energy method is suggested as an alternative valuation method, using a biocentric approach to value ecosystems based on energy and/or material flow, rather than economically. Valuation methods may be used to increase tropical wetland protection, which is desperately needed due to their systematic degradation across the globe. As an example of how this may be achieved, a valuation of mangroves is included, showing the relative human need for their ESS and providing examples of their economic valuation.
