Abstract

The Ocean Grazer is a device that is currently under development at the University of Groningen. This device can extract energy from ocean waves by the currently under research ‘Multi-Piston Multi-Pump Power Take-Off’ (MP2PTO) system. Besides this, the Ocean Grazer has a large platform, which can facilitate also different kinds of renewable energy converters, such as wind turbines or oscillating water columns (OWC). OWCs are devices that are capable of extracting energy from waves by transforming the motion of waves into displaced air past a Power Take Off system, which can convert this airflow into energy. This research aims to provide insights if an OWC can be of added value for the Ocean Grazer, economically and technically. A goal in this is to create a mathematical model for such a device and create a new design that can potentially be placed in the Ocean Grazer housing. Therefore, it is chosen to design a multi-chamber OWC, in which multiple chambers work together to drive a turbine with a higher efficiency and a higher energy production than classical OWCs. A scale prototype is proposed and created in this thesis. The results look promising for further research.
