Abstract

Adipic acid is a chemical with a total demand of about 3,3 million tons/year in 2016. The chemical is mainly used for the production of nylon 6-6, which is a leading polymer in the current industry. Nowadays adipic acid is mainly produced by the oxidation of a mixture containing hexanone and hexanol (KA-oil) which is obtained from benzene and is accompanied by hazardous by-products . Since the crude oil reserves are declining and the green house emission is a big environmental concern for the international politics, bio-based routes towards adipic acid production represent a sustainable alternative to the existing fossil fuel-based route. The project is defined by 3 goals: 1) To find a bio-based route to produce adipic acid that is not industrially developed yet; 2) To come up with an rudimentary design of the associated chemical plant; 3) to make an economic evaluation of the bio-based route to determine whether it is economical feasible.
