Abstract
Apart from providing entertainment a serious game also has the goal of educating its users about a particular field. cite{Brinks2015} reported a lack of knowledge to identify causes of alarms in nurses on a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). A serious game was created to help educate nurses in providing the most likely causes and treatments in accordance with alarms typically present on the PICU. A number of nurses helped in the development of the project. The design of the game was influenced by additional goals, such as maintaining motivation as well as including visual elements of the PICU. This led to the program being a top-down control game, which uses multiple-choice questions to improve the knowledge of its users. The effects of the game were investigated with the use of an experiment where the game was tested against a version of the program without the inclusion of game-elements. Students played either version followed by a standard written multiple-choice questionnaire. Test-results showed an increase over initial training-results. Furthermore, no significant difference was found between test-results of both groups. It can be concluded that the addition of game-elements does not appear to negatively influence the educational effects on students.
