Abstract
Wind is an important resource for energy generation. Wind energy conversion is realized through wind turbines, which are generally placed close together in a wind farm. However, these wind farms do not operate at their full economic potential. They are generally operated to produce maximum power, disregarding mechanical loads and energy prices. This research is conducted to extend and improve a wind farm operation strategy with respect to the energy market, wind and other parameters for an arbitrary number of wind turbines. After this research, an answer to the question “In which way can an existing wind farm operation strategy be improved to balance power maximization, power deviations reduction and mechanical load reduction for any given number of wind turbines?” is obtained. The solution is obtained by generalizing an existing set of Matlab® codes. After that, the power deviations are included in the optimization problem, followed by finding optimal parameter values with respect to energy prices. This research provides a more realistic and valuable solution for wind farm owners which can be implemented in different sizes of wind farms. In order to make the solution obtained even more valuable, a closed solution with respect to the axial induction factor needs to be found. Moreover, upper bounds for the parameters need to be obtained analytically and a solution should be found without assuming the actuator disc model under the near-field wake condition.
