Abstract

This thesis investigates and characterizes renewable energy sources’ short-time power fluctuations, and investigates what influence these short-time power fluctuations have on the ability of a power grid’s controller to minimize the frequency deviation from the utility frequency. This is investigated by building a Matlab model which consists of a power grid representation, a controller, and a noise signal. Simulations are ran in Matlab for the case of a constant noise signal, and for the case of a time-varying, Gaussian distributed noise signal. Every 2.5 seconds there was a new noise signal inserted into the system. From the simulations was concluded that the controller was not able to minimize the frequency deviation from the utility frequency. This is due to that the noise signal is updated faster than the controller is able to control a noise signal.
