Abstract

A problem in the medical world arises in the implantation of metal implants into the human body. A lack of bone promotion is detected and in addition, the biocompatibility lacks and shows opportunities for improvement. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is proper solution for this problem, HA is a compound that is detected in natural bone itself. In this thesis HA is produced using electrochemical deposition. HA takes on different morphologies and phase compositions when the conditions of production are adjusted. Relations have been observed which could help in acquiring the ideal production characteristics. The relation between voltage and morphology is observed to be minimal. Minor changes are found, it was chosen to neglect these minor changes. With an increase in voltage, the chance exists that no coating deposits. The temperature does have a clear influence. At the temperature of 55°C a mixture of needle-like and plate-like morphology is detected, at 65°C the morphology exhibit a mixture of ribbon-like morphology in the higher voltages and a mixture of plate- and needle-like morphology in the lower voltages. In the 75°C category, the morphology is ribbon-like. Lastly, the relation between weight percentage H2O2 and morphology was deduced. Overall, the type of morphology remains comparable. However, with certain samples, it led to minor differences in porosity, thickness and length of the morphology in the range of 0.1-1.0 nm. Additionally, the increase of voltage, it was observed that no coating was attached to the substrate. The ideal surface morphology was observed with the conditions 0.5 weight percentage H2O2, 55°C and 1.2 volt. The influence of weight percentage and temperature on phase composition is an increase in H2O2 and temperature results in a more HA. The ideal phase composition was thus observed at the sample with the condition 1.5 weight percentage H2O2, a temperature of 75C and at 1.4 volt. The influence of weight percentage H2O2 on Ca/P ratio can be defined as minimal, whereas an increase in temperature result in a higher value for Ca/P ratio. Consequently, the optimal conditions are 1.5 weight percentage H2O2, a temperature of 75 and 1.4 volt. Concerning the optimal sample, the results of morphology, phase composition are contradictory. It can be concluded that the 65° C group contains the best samples. The optimal sample that satisfied the requirements was produced under the conditions: 1.5 weight percentage H2O2, 65°C and 1.6 volt.
