Abstract

A novel direction in psychopathology research is the use of repeated measurements over a period of time. A well-known method for performing these repeated measurements are Ecological Momentary Assesments (EMA). EMA are filled in in natural settings for user [16], and several times a day. Currently a research initiative by the University of Groningen, HoeGekIsNL, uses this approach by asking users to fill in questionnaires on the phone, a method which has a few disadvantages. Wearable technology (e.g. smartwatches) seems the least intrusive manner of administering these questionnaires to users. In the present work we focus on the development of an application prototype that runs on a smartwatch, and can be used to administer small questionnaires (2-5 questions) according to a predefined schedule. User experience matters as long as it avoids participants faking their answers or avoiding completing the questionnaires. In order to determine which user interface elements work best in a smartwatch EMA application, we conduct both an online survey (n = 65) and a more intensive test in person (n = 10). Ultimately based on the results from this study, we polish the application’s prototype. The resulting prototype is an Android Wear application paired with its corresponding phone application, the phone application pushes user data to a backend server that could potentially store the results or forward them to other research platforms.
