Abstract
Grazing by microzooplankton is an important factor during spring bloom formation both for phytoplankton and for higher trophic levels. We try to quantify the strength of microzooplanktonic grazing with the dilution method, both with the traditional measure of chlorophyll α and flowcytometry. While in open ocean systems chlorophyll can be used for estimating grazing pressure, in coastal sytems (where diatoms dominate spring blooms which are less grazed by microzooplankton) discrepancies may be found. We found strong grazing on small phytoplankton but non on larger species using flowcytometry. With the chlorophyll analyses little grazing pressure was found. It can be concluded that using cholorphyll α when measuring microzooplanktonic grazing might lead to an underestimation of actual grazing.
