Abstract
Humans have the ability to use theory of mind recursively. That is, they are able to explicitly attribute unobservable mental content to others and can engage in higher order theory of mind to consider what others believe about their own beliefs. Agent-based simulation studies of theory of mind show a clear advantage for the use of higher-order theory of mind in competitive games. In this paper we investigate whether humans use higher-order theory of mind to their advantage in the limited bidding game. Participants played several games against agents who use different orders of theory of mind. The results do not show that people used theory of mind in the limited bidding game but that people prefer to use simpler strategies instead.
