Abstract
The Oryon watermill produces power from low-velocity fluid flow in shallow rivers. The watermill consists of three rotorarms each containing several lamellae, through which momentum is transferred from the water to the rotor. A numerical model of this would be very computationally expensive. In this research, the possibility of modelling the lamellae using porous screens is investigated. Several ways of modelling are discussed, such as a potential flow model. Integral mass- and momentum balances are established for both the lamellae and the porous screen. For the porous screen a source term is added. The balances are then compared to find a relation between the porosity of the screen and the opening angle of the lamellae. This relation is checked numerically using an OpenFOAM model.
