Abstract
This master’s thesis describes the use of the B0 ? K±? ? channel as normalization in the search for the charged lepton flavor violating B0 (s) ? e ±µ ? decay. Charged lepton flavor violating decays are heavily suppressed in the Standard Model and are therefore used to probe for New Physics. Using LHC Run I data, collected by the LHCb detector in the years 2011 and 2012, this analysis determines the B0 ? K±? ? channel’s yield, and the efficiencies of the LHCb detector’s acceptance, trigger, reconstruction&selection and particle identification. We find a value for the normalization factor ?norm of (3.91 ± 0.21) · 10?12 , respectively, (1.69 ± 0.06) · 10?12 for the 2011 and 2012 samples, which are used to determine the B(B0 ? e ±µ ?) = ?norm · Nsig sig and B(B0 s ? e ±µ ?) = ?norm · fd fs · Nsig sig branching fractions, and identify the yield determination as the largest contributor to the uncertainty on ?norm for both 2011 and 2012.
