Abstract

In the last decades there has been an increasing demand for green energy as fossil based fuels are slowly running out. As the earth contains more water than land, extracting energy from waves provided by water is a very promising source of green energy. The extraction of energy from waves can be done with a wave energy converter, such as the Ocean Grazer, a novel wave energy collection and storage device, currently being developed by the University of Groningen. This paper is about designing the external platform structure of the Ocean Grazer under the effect of various loading conditions, together with cost estimations to build such a structure. The loading conditions and their effect on the external structure will have to be examined, after which simulations in solidworks will be run to determine the best design for the external structure capable of resisting all the various loading conditions. Since the external structure will be built from concrete, the effects of the marine environment on concrete have to be taken into account together with proper simulations in solidworks to ensure reliability of the design. Lastly, cost estimations associated with building the external platform structure will be conducted.
