Abstract
Previous research has shown that time perception relies on working memory processes, other parallel cognitive tasks can also be carried out in working memory system and therefore interfere with time perception. In particular, listening to music may lead to working memory use, which may be different for familiar music than for unfamiliar music. Thus, it is expected that the familiarity of music might have an effect on time perception. A more controlled behavioral experiment than previous research has been conducted. The results show that when familiar music is playing in the background, participants tend to reproduce the same time duration longer than in the unfamiliar music background. In addition, participants reproduce the same time duration much shorter in the background without music than with music. A PRIMs model has been built to explain the primary results, and the model fits the data finally.
