Abstract
Conservation is the understanding, that, although the dimensions of a given object can change, the mass or quantity of that object remains constant. This concept of conservation is very difficult for young children yet feels intuitive to adults. Many studies have focused on when conservation starts, but little has been done to identify how the understanding of conservation develops or how children move through the various conservation strategies. This paper focuses on generating an ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought - Rational) model that replicates previous studies on conservation by implementing an operationalised theoretical model by Siegler \citep{Siegler}. Results show that an operationalised model has to be more complex than previously thought to fully replicate the development of conservation strategies.
