Abstract
This thesis considers a fault detection and isolation problem for branched water distribution networks. From the literature it is known that the problem of measuring contaminants in water distribution networks can be modeled by input-output systems in state-space form as well as using graph theory. It is shown that a graph topological condition for fault detection and isolation discussed in earlier research is also applicable to the water distribution networks. Using this new insight an algorithm was developed for the placement of sensors in water distribution networks. For known contamination locations in a network it is now possible to determine where sensors need to be placed to ensure fault detection and isolation.
