Abstract
Human ageing is a process that is accompanied by various negative symptoms like increased susceptibility to diseases, decreased physical and mental functions, and many more. Understanding and potentially slowing or even reversing this process has been a dream of mankind for all of history, but science is finally starting to elucidate its mechanisms. It has been found that ageing and all its symptoms have a number of fundamental causes, one of which is the degradation of epigenetic information, for example by changes in chromatin modification patterns. This thesis explores the many ways in which chromatin is modified in healthy cells and tissues, how these patterns break down during ageing, and how they can be restored to revitalize tissues.
