Abstract
Unlike conventional plastics, PLA can easily be formed from natural molecules. Its monomer, lactic acid, also occurs in nature and is non-toxic. Furthermore, PLA is biodegradable. Finally, it has some tensile properties that are attractive for some packaging applications. These properties make it a great contender as a sustainable alternative to modern food packaging plastics, which are mostly fossil fuel based and non-biodegradable. However, PLA also has some undesirable properties including, but not limited to, high price and low flexibility. In order to improve some of the properties, the addition of lignin has been suggested. Lignin is a macromolecule that gives vascular plants their structure. It is separated in great quantities in the pulp bad paper industry, where it is burnt on site as a low energy fuel. This makes lignin an interesting material to use, since it is of biological origin and extremely cheap. There are many different types of lignin which could possibly influence the properties or the price. As of yet, there have been few comparative studies showing the influences of these properties. With this thesis the factors and the influences thereof are reviewed, compared and explained. This thesis provides an overview possibly suitable for future reference when forming and researching lignin-PLA composites.
