Abstract

Fishmeal is the primary protein source of commercial farm feeds for Atlantic salmon. Due to the high price and low availability of fishmeal, there has been an increasing use of alternative feeds with plant-based ingredients, jeopardising the gut health and growth rate of salmon. To further understand the role of salmon gut microbiome in digestion and gut health, an in vitro salmon gut simulator was developed and set up by the start-up company SalmoSim, to carry out in vitro analyses of gut microbial diversity and composition.
