Abstract
The intermittency of renewable energy sources and the mismatch between energy demand and supply increase the need for long term and large scale energy storage. Producing green hydrogen from water and electricity, storing this hydrogen, and subsequently generating electricity using gas turbines running on hydrogen, may offer a possible way to provide this energy storage. Next to storing electricity, hydrogen is also an energy carrier that allows for transport via pipelines. Additionally, hydrogen can be used as a fuel in industry and for heating houses. This research focuses on comparing energy systems with different applications of hydrogen. The goal is to design a balanced energy system based on renewables that can fulfill all energy demand, without producing hydrogen surpluses.
