Abstract

The Dutch word ‘er’ literally translates to ‘there’ but can have four different meanings depending on the context. The distinction between these can often be ambiguous. In the case of er being used with prepositions, it is hypothesised that er sets up a long-distance dependency between itself and the preposition. Previous research suggests the processing of this dependency would cause a measurable slow down in reading speed. A Self-Paced Reading experiment is set up to confirm this, but no statistically relevant findings are found. While this could point to er setting up a different kind of dependency, interference through confounds and method errors is suspected.
