Abstract
The goal of this study is to identify the moment of insight in the brain, when chess players are solving chess puzzles. A moment of insight happens when someone is solving a problem and they suddenly find the solution. An EEG experiment was conducted with 25 chess players, in which they each had to solve 100 chess puzzles. The experiment was done on a computer to record the answers and reaction times. The puzzles were all mate-in-two. Additionally, the puzzles were divided into two groups, sacrifice and non-sacrifice. A Hidden semi-Markov Model with multivariate pattern analysis (HsMM-MVPA) was used to derive cognitive stages out of the EEG data.
