Abstract

Tagetes Erecta is the new interest of farmers to use as a natural soil disinfectant. Since the use of chemicals is prohibited, Tagetes Erecta provides a new and more sustainable way to remove nematodes from soil due to their disinfectant properties. However, this process of soil disinfection is economically not attractive, because no profit can be made during disinfection. Fortunately, Tagetes Erecta contains a carotenoid called (3R,3’R,6’R)-lutein (1), which could be the key to making the use of Tagetes Erecta as soil disinfectant more viable. In the Tagetes Erecta, 1 is present as a mono- or diester of different fatty acids, these lutein fatty acid esters (2) have to be saponified to obtain 1, which can be further synthesized into more valuable carotenoids such as 3’-epilutein (3) and (3R,3’R)-zeaxanthin (4). Syncom cooperates with other northern Dutch companies: J.G. & G.J. Seubring, HLB and New Businesses Agrifood to realize this synthetic process.
