Abstract

Current PTSD treatments have limitations, prompting exploration of alternatives. Traumatic memories, central to PTSD, can be disrupted during reconsolidation, offering a novel approach. Propranolol and MDMA show promise in this regard. Propranolol, a beta-blocker, inhibits fear memory reconsolidation. MDMA-assisted psychotherapy exhibits enduring PTSD symptom reduction, possibly involving memory reconsolidation disruption. While both therapies show potential, challenges persist, with propranolol's efficacy debated due to replication issues. MDMA therapy presents stronger evidence, though the specific role of memory reconsolidation remains unclear. Both approaches highlight the potential of disrupting memory processes for enduring PTSD treatment.
