Abstract

Organizations are progressively being pushed to operate with environmental sustainability in mind. They already manage their business processes with modeling languages such as Business Process Model and Notation 2.0 (BPMN). BPMN is effective in representing business processes and workflows, but by default lacks the ability to model sustainability metrics. This limitation results in a blind spot for businesses to assess and improve their environmental impact by not integrating sustainability as a fundamental part of their business process management (BPM). This thesis addresses limitations in current BPM tools by extending both the Camunda 8 BPM engine and the Camunda Modeler BPMN modeling tool. The engine extension introduces execution-phase tracking for environmental impact metrics, while the modeling tool extension enables the graphical modeling of sustainability annotations to support runtime tracking. Together, these enhancements allow organizations to simultaneously manage business processes and assess their ecological footprint from design to execution.
